Spitzkoppe formations

In order to see the sun rise over the Spitzkoppe we had to get up really early. So we did.

Early in the morning

Linda just can't function properly this early in the morning. She tries hard, but somehow it doesn't work. Wherever possible she would lay down and have a bit of a slumber.

Darth Vader?

We made a weired finding that morning. On top of the rock formations we climbed we found the lid of an urn, at least that's what we believe it was. Some H. A. Dormehl that apparently got 60 years old and died on August 7th, 2003. A bit creepy. How did that lid end up here? Were the ashes including urn dropped out of a plane? Or did somebody empty the content here and forget the lid afterwards? One can only wonder.

Unexpected findings of different kinds

Once the sun had risen completely we went up the "Chain Ladder" to the "Bushman's Paradise", a plateau on top of Spitzkoppe. I do understand why it is called 'paradise'. A very secluded area which we again had all to ourselves - not the least because it still was early in the morning.

We stayed in the 'paradise' for several hours. Hiked forth and back and discovered lot's of animals and plants we hadn't seen (or at least not noticed) before.

Namibias Matterhorn

The formations here really can have your immagination go running wild. From bowling pins, balls and marbles over waves and mushrooms to faces you can discover anything (if you want).

Finally, after having driven all around the "Grosse Spitzkoppe", we headed back for the coast along a road which had been recommended to us. On the slightly more than 100km stretch we met approx. five cars in total, but passed probably 20 booths where people were selling stones. This part of Namibia is renown for its rare and often very beautiful stones.

For once Linda was flying - although it wasn't our plane. She was trying to get airborn anyway, I think. 130km/h over a dirt road, that quickly can get exciting :-)

Long lone roads - watch the signs

In Hentiesbaai we stopped for a very good lunch at a restaurant just next to the fuelling station. Then we continued south along the coast.

Beauties in "Bushman's Paradise"

Dinner we had back in Swakopmund in the famous fish restaurant "The Tug". So famous in fact that one has to make reservations several days in advance (which we had). It is worth the wait I must say. Perfect food with perfect service.
